FEBRUARY 2010 NEWS BRIEFS:

Palisades Contract Awarded for Mass Transit Tunnel

The NJ Transit authorized the award for the Palisades tunnel segment, part of the agency’s $8.7 billion Mass Transit Tunnel. The total project is the nation’s largest public transit project that will double commuter rail capacity between New Jersey and New York.

The Palisades tunnel segment, the second of three tunnel components of the project, was awarded to a joint venture of Schiavone/Skanska/Shea on a $271 .7 million contract, according to the website njbiz.com. The segment involves the construction of twin 5,200-ft bores on the New Jersey side of the Hudson.

In December, NJ Transit awarded a $583 million contract for the Manhattan tunnels segment to a joint venture of Barnard/Judlau. Prequalification for the third and final tunnel segment – the Hudson River segment – is underway with an award expected in the fall.
